Role Overview
Security Officers assigned to cargo vessels support the safe and professional operation of international maritime assignments. The role requires continuous situational awareness, disciplined conduct and the ability to work effectively within a structured onboard environment.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a professional security presence and continuous situational awareness onboard.
- Conduct assigned monitoring, observation and basic security checks.
- Identify and report security concerns, risks and incidents through the appropriate chain of command.
- Support access-control procedures and security-related cargo and supply operations.
- Cooperate professionally with vessel personnel and relevant port-side stakeholders.
- Operate and check assigned security equipment in accordance with established procedures.
- Follow vessel and company instructions while maintaining disciplined professional conduct.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Candidate Requirements
- Minimum one year of professional experience in the military, law enforcement or commercial security sector.
- English-language proficiency at a minimum B1 level.
- Ability to work effectively within a structured international maritime environment.
- Strong situational awareness, reliability and professional discipline.
- Ability to follow instructions and communicate through the appropriate chain of command.
- Readiness to work onboard for extended maritime assignments.
- Professional conduct when cooperating with vessel personnel, security-team members and port-side stakeholders.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
Documentation and Certification Pathway
Maritime documents and certificates are required before deployment. However, candidates who do not yet hold all relevant maritime qualifications are still welcome to apply.
Applications are initially assessed based on professional background, experience, suitability and availability. Candidates progressing through the process may receive guidance on the documents and certificates required for the relevant opportunity.
- Valid passport.
- Valid Seaman’s Book.
- Valid maritime medical certificate, such as ENG1 or an accepted equivalent.
- STCW Basic Safety Training certificate.
- STCW Security Awareness or Designated Security Duties certificate.
- Recent criminal-record certificate.
- Yellow Fever vaccination certificate, where required by the operating area.
- Recent drug and alcohol test, when requested before deployment.
- Relevant military, police or commercial-security service documentation.
- Marine Security Operative training certificate, where held or required for the assignment.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Employment and Deployment Conditions
Cargo-vessel assignments operate in an international maritime environment. Specific employment terms may vary according to the contracting company, vessel and operational requirements.

- Typical contract duration of approximately four to six months.
- Worldwide operating environment.
- Flights, hotel accommodation and assignment-related transfers may be arranged and covered by the contracting company.
- Medical insurance may be provided in accordance with the applicable employment contract.
- Assistance with obtaining relevant maritime and security certifications may be available to suitable candidates.
- Compensation and joining conditions are confirmed individually before deployment.
